In the year 2000, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Amtrak, created new technology with their high-speed Acela service in the Northeast. Acela is derived from the words "excellence" and "acceleration." The high speed electric train is capable of speeds up to 150mph. Amtrak plans to implement many new rail systems in its efforts to entice the American public back to rail travel as an efficient and effective mode of transportation.
