The Zaca fire north of Santa Barbara may become the largest forest fire in California history.  Wayne Norman took these photos from Santa Barbara in early August 2007.

Looking north on Patterson Avenue.  Each afternoon the smoke would emerge from behind La Cumbre Peak.  A severe ash fall fell on Santa Barbara on August 3 and 4

Looking east over Patterson.  That smoke is over downtown Santa Barbara.  These photos were taken at 6pm.

Plumes of smoke would often appear over the mountains.  But these August 12 photos show smoke from backfires set by the fire crews to keep the fire from spreading south to Santa Barbara.

A closeup of the same smoke plume on August 12.

Wayne Norman's 14 month old nephew Noah with Noah's mama Tracy and daddy Mike, also taken August 12.   This was an unusual look.  Most days had a lower level of smoke as shown in the first two photos on this page.

The Santa Barbara Independent does a terrific job reporting on the complexities of this fire, and has outstanding photos.  To read the Independent's coverage, click here
