THE RAYS OF SUNSHINE

All of us can think of special individuals who always manage to find time to help other people. 14/WILI and the Mohegan Sun have a name for those special people. They are Connecticut's RAYS OF SUNSHINE, and together we're paying tribute to them. Hear acceptance interviews with many of our Ray of Sunshine winners by clicking here. Frank and Shirley Mauro

The December 2008 Ray(s) of Sunshine are Shirley and Frank Mauro of Windham. Our February 2008 Ray of Sunshine Charlie Wynn's nomination letter said:

I would like to nominate Frank and Shirley Mauro for the Mohegan Sun Ray of Sunshine Award. The selfless devotion of Frank and Shirley to the benefit of others has been an inspiration to me and can serve as an inspiration for everyone.

Frank, a former band director and music teacher, has served the Willimantic Lions Club as President and longstanding member of the Board of Directors. He was my sponsor in the Lions and exemplifies the highest ideals of Lionism. For his outstanding service, he has received numerous District, State, and International Lion awards. In addition, he is an active member of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and Facilitator for the Men's Retreat held at the Immaculata Retreat Center.

Shirley Mauro is a woman who is dedicated to helping those in need through her charitable gifts as well as the most precious gift of all--her time. She, too, has served the Willimantic Lions Club as President and Board of Directors member. Shirley can be seen every Monday at St. Joseph's Living Center pushing wheelchairs to and from Mass. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, she can be found at the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry (WAIM) volunteering to work wherever she is needed. At other times, she is out collecting used eyeglasses and hearing aids for distribution to needy recipients. In addition, she drives people who need transportation to their doctors appointments. She is truly of generous heart and compassion for those in need.

The world would be a much better place if there were more Rays of Sunshine like Frank and Shirley Mauro in it.
