WILI's 2010 BLOCK ISLAND TRIP
WILI's Wayne Norman took a Constitution Coach filled with WILI listeners to the high-speed Block Island Express on Sunday, September 12, 2010. A good time was had by all.
The group scattered in many directions. Wayne walked about 7 miles of road, trail, and rocky beach, saying, "The last time I walked this far in one day was when I backpacked the Grand Canyon in 2002." Here are some of Wayne's photos from the day.
A camel on Block Island? Yep! Nyla is one of many exotic critters at the Abrams Animal Farm just south of Old Harbor. And it's FREE!
Llamas, Sicilian donkeys, fainting goats, a zebu, indian runner ducks, and an immense Scottish Highlands Steer called Mr. McDuff (brown on lower right)

Yakkity Yak (Don't Talk Back)
A big tortoise (nearly 3 feet long)
A red kangaroo
Emu
Sorry these are so dark, but it was tough to get a shot of the ring-tailed lemurs, which are endemic to the island of Madagascar
After a delightful hike westward on the Fresh Swamp Trail (Greenway), Wayne took a lunch break at the Fresh Pond
While looking for the Rodman's Hollow nature preserve, Wayne got lost on the poorly-marked Fresh Pond Greenway, and ended up on the other side of the pond. The three prior pictures were taken directly across the pond from this shot.
Wayne gave up on Rodman's Hollow and wound up going south to Painted Rock, which is about three feet wide, and is covered in hundreds of layers of paint
Continuing southward, Wayne took a steep trail down to Vail Beach and enjoyed watching the surf
Then Wayne took the non-traditional way of reaching the beach below Mohegan Bluffs--by walking 1.2 miles east on the very rocky shoreline. They should change the name of this place to Rock Island. Mohegan Bluffs are on the horizon.

The spectacular view from atop Mohegan Bluffs. That thin dark line on the horizon where the water line meets the cliffs is Montauk, Long Island, NY.
